Tank to Pump

Intake

The intake is where water enters the pump — from the booster tank, a hydrant, or a drafting source. What feeds the intake determines how much water the pump has to work with.

Nothing leaves the discharges that did not first come in through an intake. The operator's first job on any line is to give the pump a water source: open tank-to-pump, connect a hydrant, or establish a draft.

The intake side also sets the ceiling on flow. A pump cannot send out more water than the intake delivers, so a weak supply at the intake limits every discharge downstream of it.
