Gated Wye

A gated wye is an appliance that splits one incoming line into two outgoing lines, each with its own valve. It lets one supply feed two attack lines while controlling them independently.

Both open lines carry the same 150 psi — a wye divides the flow, not the pressure. Opening the second line doesn't halve the first; it raises the total flow the pump must supply, so you throttle up to hold the discharge pressure.

Pressure falls down a line to friction, not the wye: over ~200 ft of 1.75″ line at ~150 gpm, friction loss ≈ 69.75 psi, so the nozzle sees ≈ 80.25 psi. Longer or higher-flow lines lose more.

Gates

One inlet, two gates, two lines. With both gates open the wye splits the supply into two independently controlled attack lines.

One inlet, two independent gates. The wye divides a single supply into two attack lines you control separately. When water passes through it the wye adds about 10psi of appliance loss. These are training estimates; follow your SOPs and your apparatus's own gauges and limits.

Toggle each gate and drag the pump discharge pressure: one inlet splits into two independently controlled lines, and each open line carries the SAME pressure — the discharge minus the wye's appliance loss — whether one or both gates are open. A wye divides the flow, not the pressure.

The two gates let the operator open, close, or throttle each branch separately. That independence is what makes a split lay work: the thirstier branch sets the supply pressure and the easier branch gets gated down to its own target.

Like any appliance, the wye adds a loss as water turns and divides inside it. Budget that loss in the pump discharge pressure, or both branches downstream run weaker than planned.
