Water Sources
Static Water Source
A static water source is unpressurized water — a pond, lake, pool, or portable tank — that an engine must draft from. Because it has no pressure of its own, the pump has to lift the water to itself.
Where there is no hydrant, a static source can still supply an engine, but only by drafting: the pump creates a vacuum and atmospheric pressure pushes the water up. The available lift is limited and shrinks with altitude.
Drafting from static water demands an airtight suction path and good technique. The reward is an independent water supply anywhere there is enough open water to drop a hard suction line.
